Skipper

Job description

The Skipper has a managerial position on board in which he reports directly to the Captain. The Skipper must be able to replace the Captain with regard to navigation, cargo handling and maintenance if necessary. The Skipper receives his orders from the Captain. The Skipper reports to the captain or, in his absence, to the Charterer regarding the execution of travel orders, the Technical Service regarding the ship and to the HR department regarding the crew. The Skipper is jointly responsible for carrying out all actions necessary for a proper and safe execution of the transports in accordance with the order specifications and the applicable regulations.

Your tasks

• Ensures the execution of orders given to the captain.
• Ensures coordination with the Captain and the Technical Service in the context of maintenance and repair work.
• In consultation with the captain, takes care of the administrative procedures that are necessary to comply with all legal and formal provisions that are set for keeping the ships in service.
• Implements the personnel policy and is responsible for the information and practical training of personnel, so that they acquire the necessary knowledge and skills with regard to the nature and performance of the work.
• Ensures and acts immediately after an accident, whether or not with a serious outcome, for care and calls in the necessary authorities (calamity plan).
• For a good transfer at the shift change.
• For correctly completing Dynamics.
• For the correct completion of the weekly reports on a daily basis.
• For the correct completion of the sailing times book and compliance with the sailing times act.

Quality, safety, health and environment

• Stimulates the crew’s quality and environmental awareness by giving clear instructions.
• Reports problems within his field of activity to the Captain or the Technical Services department and initiates possible measures.
• Is jointly responsible for compliance with the established procedures and regulations as laid down in the quality system.
• Ensures and is jointly responsible for maintaining and amending the Captain’s and Fleet Manual.
• Is jointly responsible for the safety, health and well-being of the crew and third parties present on the ship.
• Is jointly responsible for issuing personal protective equipment.
• Obtain information from the crew, Captain and/or Technical Service as often as necessary about the safety, health and environmental conditions on the ship and, if necessary, take corrective and/or preventive measures.
• Ensures that all equipment is properly maintained.
• Is aware of the calamity procedure and the calamity plan on board the ship on duty.
• Is aware of types of calamities.
• Recognizing types of alarms.
• Is familiar with the operation of emergency stop.
• Is familiar with the emergency steering gear and emergency steering gear lowering.
• Ensures a representative ship and crew including hygienic living and working conditions.

Job requirements

• Possession of a Schipper diploma, General Certificate AB, Rhine patent, VHF radio certificate, Radar diploma, ADN Basic, ADN Chemie.
• At least two years’ experience as a helmsman in inland tanker shipping.
• Organizational and managerial capabilities.
• In possession of a valid service booklet.
• Good command of the Dutch language in word and writing.
• Good command of the nautical English language in word and writing.
• Good command of the nautical German language in word and writing.
